Eyes on the prize

Artists and creatives are being encouraged to begin brainstorming their entry ideas for the 47th Rio Tinto and QAL Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards ahead of the submission period in early October. Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum (GRAGM) will call for entries from Tuesday 4 October until Saturday 8 October to allow entrants to deliver their work.

Submission times are 10am-4pm (October 4-7) and 10am-1pm (8 October). Entry sections include: • Easel Works • Works on Paper • Three Dimensional and Fibre Works • Digital Works. Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said the Rio Tinto and QAL Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards remain one of Queensland’s most prestigious regional art events.

“Each year the quality of submissions increases and I’m expecting the same again this year,” Councillor Burnett said.

“With a generous prize pool of more than $40,000 on offer, now is the perfect time for artists and creatives to plan and create their work ahead of the call for entries taking place in early October.”

Cr Burnett said Karina Devine, Director of Warwick Art Gallery for the past 16 years, will adjudicate the 47th Rio Tinto & QAL Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards.

“Karina has 25 years of experience as an art educator and gallery manager working in regional Queensland and has university qualifications in Visual Arts, Education and Media Studies,” Cr Burnett said.

“She is committed to contributing to the growth of regional communities by embracing the lifestyle of Queensland country towns and striving to achieve equity and sustainability for rural Queensland through the arts.

“I have no doubt Karina will be impressed with the artistic talent on display at the 47th Rio Tinto and QAL Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards and I know myself and the GRAGM team are looking forward to her arrival in Gladstone.”
